It undoubtedly was a release of previously hidden information, but was it done in order to prevent a greater exposure of more important details? If so, what are the missing details?
Could there possibly be missing information that is even more important for a seeker to understand than the fundamental concepts of self-remembering, identification, unnecessary talk and negative emotions?
Here we examine the story The Sly Man and the Devil. — Gurdjieff's reply to questions about the origins of the Fourth Way. The story can be found under the "Excerpt" tab below.
Apparently, due to the wealth of information contained and the verifiable results produced, its origins are of little consequence to those who study and practice "the work".
If I remember correctly there have been at least a few books written which go into greater detail about Gurdjieff's past and the material's provenance.(James Moore comes to mind), however when searching the Internet for background, reviews, comments and opinions, related to this story, very little came up, most of which has been cut/pasted within this post.
(On a personal note, I remember quite clearly my reaction upon first reading about the concept of Identification — why was it I'd never heard about this before! Read How I began the work to learn about that ah-ha moment of discovery.)
The missing detail? Oh, it's that little part about unconscious procreation – don't do it! It's in the fine print under "How the Matrix controls its Copper Tops". ( See HERE, HERE and HERE for more information.)
Perhaps those three reference pages are not the best examples of pages that explain how the modern civilization / the system (the Matrix) controls parents through their children. It's the best I can come up with now. Having children complicates life and diverts energy from personal duties of growing a sovereign soul.
The Fourth Way places much emphasis upon growing a soul Many techniques for aiding the efforts to grow a soul. Extensive instruction for how to do it (grow a soul).
Very little said on WTF a soul is, I think nothing about the astral world disembodied soul exists in how to maintain in that environment, how to operate within the astral dimension. Maybe I'm wrong, and forgetting some information, or have not read something or the other? However, other sites that I am aware of do offer specific information about souls, soul technology, ET/AB, or even those special favorites, the Archons. Where is any of this within the so-called work books?
Maybe my memory is failing, but I recall very little information in the Fourth Way that has any relevance to the decision to have or not have children.
According to Gurdjieff and the Fourth Way: A Critical Appraisal, Gurdjieff ". . .believed that the function of sex was twofold: to ensure the continuation of the human species, and to produce a ‘finer energy’ to nourish higher spiritual development." He regarded sexual energy as sacred and wrote in Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson that sex “constitutes and is considered everywhere in our Great Universe for beings of all kinds of natures, as the most sacred of all sacred Divine sacraments.” (3)
Furthermore, in the report, "Sexual Beliefs and Practices", it is stated that Gurdjieff ". . . strongly condemned masturbation, contraception and homosexuality as affronts to the proper order of nature. At the same time he clearly possessed a sophisticated and nuanced understanding of the role of sexuality in the process of spiritual transformation, and enunciated a complex model of the transmutation of sexual energy to a higher developmental level."
Although, the above should be somewhat apparent, as Gurdjieff fathered at least (7) children. [edit: 02/10/14 | According to Mark Pilkington, "He was highly charismatic and a notorious womaniser, said to have fathered over 100 children."] It seem he had no problem "growing a soul" while cranking out seven [100+] more kids.
Gurdjieff Legacy posits that,
- “Dissatisfied with the answers of contemporary religion and science, Gurdjieff intuited that ancient civilizations knew the meaning of existence.
- “And so with a group of like-minded friends who called themselves the Seekers of Truth, he made many journeys into remote and dangerous areas with the aim of rediscovering this ancient knowledge.” (read more)
The Gurdjieff Legacy also provides an often quoted web page on the origins of the Fourth Way with Essential Questions: Who Is Mr. Gurdjieff? What Is the Origin of the Teaching?
- “I am small man compared to those who sent me.”
Followed with several quick quotes from various sources pertaining to Gurdjieff's sources.
From the section at The Endless Search Eightfold Path of Raja Yoga:
- “Many sources have been proposed for Gurdjieff's system. They run the gamut from the Hindu Yogas, through Buddhism, Eastern Christianity, Sufism, Kabalistic Judaism, Western Alchemy, Taoist Alchemy, Zoroastrianism, Yedzidiism, Ancient Egyptian religion, and the fabled Unknown Source.
- “Many researchers have found elements from all those sources present in the Gurdjieff teaching, but by far the largest single source appears to be derived from the the Eightfold Path of Raja Yoga. Actually there are approximately 40 schools of yoga. To be somewhat precise, but not definitively so, it could be said that Gurdjieff was teaching a westernized form of Raja Yoga.”

Another possible source is from the writings ascribed to the Egyptian god Thoth or Hermes Trismigistus in the Emerald Tablet.
At Gurdjieff and the Fourth Way: A Critical Appraisal — a website whose intent, "is to bring together multiple perspectives from a wide range of sources to examine and evaluate the Gurdjieff phenomena, with the hope of stimulating debate and discussion rather than providing any final definitive statement or conclusion" — a more in-depth account of the origin(s) of the Fourth Way can be found. From the website:
- “One of the great mysteries of Gurdjieff’s life is the nature of his extensive and unremitting search for an esoteric knowledge and teaching that would explain the significance and meaning of life.
- “There has been an abundance of conjecture, conflicting theories and misinformation about this crucial phase of his life.
- “We know little about which countries and regions he visited, the spiritual teachings and traditions he studied, and the source or sources of the vast system of ideas he brought to the West and transmitted to others for almost 40 years.”

- “It is a teaching that has been paid scant regard in academic circles, and one which defies any ready précis. For these and other reasons, it harbours elements of intrigue and mystique for many people.”
Further, this paper goes on to comment,
- “It can be said to contain certain elements that cannot be directly traced to any heretofore known religious, theological or philosophical tradition. In fact, true to Gurdjieff's own enigmatic individuality, it remains uncertain whether Gurdjieff originally came across his ideas as an already existing teaching, or whether he was a syncretist who pieced together his own teaching by synthesising parts of other known or secret traditions and possibly adding some of his own original ideas and insights.”

Q. Could you tell me the difference between two men on their death-bed, one of whom has learnt the art of self-remembering and one of whom has never heard of it?
A. No, it needs an imaginative writer to describe this. There are many different possibilities—the men may be very different and there may be different circumstances.
I think I had better tell you a story. It is an old story, told in the Moscow groups in 1916 about the origin of the system and the work and about self-remembering.
It happened in an unknown country at an unknown date that a sly man was walking past a cafe and met a devil. The devil was in very poor shape, both hungry and thirsty, so the sly man took him into the cafe, ordered some coffee and asked him what the trouble was. The devil said that there was no business. In the old days he used to buy souls and burn them to charcoal, because when people died they had very fat souls that he could take to hell, and all the devils were pleased. But now all the fires in hell were out, because when people died there were no souls.
Then the sly man suggested that perhaps they could do some business together. 'Teach me how to make souls', he said, 'and I will give you a sign to show which people have souls made by me', and he ordered more coffee. The devil explained that he should teach people to remember themselves, not to identify and so on, and then, after some time, they would grow souls.
The sly man set to work, organized groups and taught people to remember themselves. Some of them started to work seriously and tried to put into practice what he taught them. Then they died, and when they came to the gates of heaven, there was St Peter with his keys on one side and the devil on the other. When St Peter was ready to open the gates, the devil would say, 'May I just ask one question—did you remember yourself?' 'Yes, certainly', the man would answer and thereupon the devil would say, 'Excuse me, this soul is mine'. This went on for a long time, until they managed somehow to communicate to the earth what was happening at the gates of heaven. Hearing this, the people he was teaching came to the sly man and said, 'Why do you teach us to remember ourselves if, when we say we have remembered ourselves, the devil takes us?'
The sly man asked, 'Did I teach you to say you remember yourselves? I taught you not to talk.' They said, 'But this was St Peter and the devil!' and the sly man said, 'But have you seen St Peter and the devil at groups? So do not talk. Some people did not talk and managed to get to heaven. I did not only make an arrangement with the devil, I also made a plan by which to deceive the devil.'
Gurdjieff in Paris
From: In Search of the Miraculous, P.D. Ouspensky, 1949, pp 57-58
"The fourth way is sometimes called the way of the sly man. The 'sly man' knows some secret which the fakir, monk, and yogi do not know. How the 'sly man' learned this secret—it is not known. Perhaps he found it in some old books, perhaps he inherited it, perhaps he bought it, perhaps he stole it from someone. It makes no difference. The 'sly man' knows the secret and with its help outstrips the fakir, the monk, and the yogi.
"Of the four, the fakir acts in the crudest manner; he knows very little and understands very little. Let us suppose that by a whole month of intense torture he develops in himself a certain energy, a certain substance which produces certain changes in him. He does it absolutely blindly, with his eyes shut, knowing neither aim, methods, nor results, simply in imitation of others.
"The monk knows what he wants a little better; he is guided by religious feeling, by religious tradition, by a desire for achievement, for salvation; he trusts his teacher who tells him what to do, and he believes that his efforts and sacrifices are 'pleasing to God.' Let us suppose that a week of fasting, continual prayer, privations, and so on, enables him to attain what the fakir develops in himself by a month of self-torture.
"The yogi knows considerably more. He knows what he wants, he knows why he wants it, he knows how it can be acquired. He knows, for instance, that it is necessary for his purpose to produce a certain substance in himself. He knows that this substance can be produced in one day by a certain kind of mental exercises or concentration of consciousness. So he keeps his attention on these exercises for a whole day without allowing himself a single outside thought, and he obtains what he needs. In this way a yogi spends on the same thing only one day compared with a month spent by the fakir and a week spent by the monk.
"But on the fourth way knowledge is still more exact and perfect. A man who follows the fourth way knows quite definitely what substances he needs for his aims and he knows that these substances can be produced within the body by a month of physical suffering, by a week of emotional strain, or by a day of mental exercises— and also, that they can be introduced into the organism from without if it is known how to do it. And so, instead of spending a whole day in exercises like the yogi, a week in prayer like the monk, or a month in self-torture like the fakir, he simply prepares and swallows a little pill which contains all the substances he wants and, in this way, without loss of time, he obtains the required results.
"It must be noted further,"' said G., "that in addition to these proper and legitimate ways, there are also artificial ways which give temporary results only, and wrong ways which may even give permanent results, only wrong results. On these ways a man also seeks the key to the fourth room and sometimes finds it. But what he finds in the fourth room is not yet known.
"It also happens that the door to the fourth room is opened artificially with a skeleton key. And in both these cases the room may prove to be empty."
With this G. stopped.
Gurdjieff felt that the traditional methods of self-knowledge, those of the fakir, monk, and yogi (acquired, respectively, through pain, devotion, and study), were inadequate on their own and often led to various forms of stagnation and one-sidedness. His methods were designed to augment the traditional paths with the purpose of hastening the developmental process. He sometimes called these methods The Way of the Sly Man because they constituted a sort of short-cut through a process of development that might otherwise carry on for years without substantive results. The teacher, possessing consciousness, sees the individual requirements of the disciple and sets tasks that he knows will result in a transformation of consciousness in that individual. Instructive historical parallels can be found in the annals of Zen Buddhism where teachers employed a variety of methods (sometimes highly unorthodox) to bring about the arising of insight in the student.
Gurdjieff taught that group efforts both enhance and surpass individual efforts preparing them to practice a new psychology of evolution. To accomplish this, he needed to constantly innovate and create new alarm clocks to awaken his sleeping students, as Jesus did 1900 years before. Students regularly met with group leaders; both separately and in group meetings, and came together for "work periods" where intensive conscious labor, connected with the forms mentioned above. Work in the kitchen was a special task and sometimes elaborate meals were prepared. This food was the lowest of the three being foods, food, air and impressions. Air and impressions being even more important, special exercises were given for them.
According to Gurdjieff, the work of schools of the Fourth Way never remains the same for long. In some cases, this has led to a break between student and teacher as is the case of Ouspensky and Gurdjieff. The outward appearance of the School and the group work can change according to the circumstances. He believed that the inner individual expression, such as the practice of self-remembering with self-observation and the non-expression of negative emotions, always remains the same and could never change, for that is the guarantee of ultimate self-development.
- “If a man could understand all the horror of the lives of ordinary people who are turning round in a circle of insignificant interests and insignificant aims, if he could understand what they are losing he would understand that there can only be one thing that is serious for him: to escape from the general law, to be free. What can be serious for a man in prison who is condemned to death? Only one thing: how to save himself, how to escape. Nothing else is serious.” - G. I. Gurdjieff
Excerpts from:The Sufi Basis of The Taming of The Shrew
The way of the Sufi is sometimes called the way of the "sly man". The "sly man" has special knowledge which the fakir, monk, and yogi do not have, because a special chain-of-transmission has given him this knowledge. The "sly man" has special secrets which enable him to outstrip the fakir, the monk, and the yogi.
. . .
In the special language of the Sufis "angel" and "devil" refer to particular states of consciousness. Angel referred to revelatory states of consciousness; devil to the automatic, associative, formatory consciousness, which keeps us vassals to sleep, and to our waking dreams, and illusion. The Sufi must find some way to "tame" this "associative process" which is always active and controls our mind. We experience joy and sorrow not at our will, but involuntarily through the automatic associative process.
Gurdjieff tells a story in which the Sly man makes a deal with the devil. In return for the devil telling him how to make souls, the sly man gave the devil a sign to show which people have souls made by him, but the sly man had made a plan to deceive the devil at the same time he made a deal with the devil. The Sly man realizes there are things which cannot be accomplished directly. There are situations that are so difficult that one cannot go straight, it is necessary to be "sly".
Excerpts from a few various pages:
George I. Gurdjieff, perhaps the greatest spiritual teacher of the 20th Century, claimed that “The Sly Man can sit down and have drinks with the Devil, and the Devil will have to pick up the check.”
Gurdjieff called his teaching the way of the "Sly Man." This term is a translation of the French "le ruse" which has less negative implications than the term "sly" and might better be translated as "clever." His intention was that people could learn to "experience" life as a school and could utilize all their ordinary experiences as opportunities for spiritual awakening.
What Gurdjieff clearly understood was that life, itself, IS THE SCHOOL, and any path of self development that "avoided" life, or sought to escape from life had severe limitations. These other ways were the way of the fakir, the way of the monk, and the way of the yogi. And so, Gurdjieff called his way - or perhaps it has always been called - the Fourth Way.
A competitor of whom little is known, or unexpectedly wins. A person who reveals little about himself or his activities, Especially one who has unexpected talents or abilities. An unknown entrant. This is Gurdjieff’s Slyman personified. An idea akin to the ace in the hole, the sucker punch, slight of hand, the wild-card, insidious and malignant; to that which seeks to confine it. Subversion,
Conspiracy, Misdirection, and Calculation utilized to seek an unsuspected advantage.
To appear as one thing, but truly be another; even if by only slight variation. An underestimated, seemingly harmless glacier holding sudden treacherous peril and demise; just below the visible surface. Not simply of the devil, nor some philosophical lip service to its puritan construct; but the vital potency of a living breathing devil.
Let's remember that when Mr. Gurdjieff began teaching in Russia before the first world war his students and disciples continuously asked him where he got his teaching. Sometimes he would say he made it all up himself. Other times he would say that he was a member of a group who studied together. Other times he would say that he got this teaching directly from the devil, and of course there is the story of the sly man and the devil which was often told in the early days.
Mr. Gurdjieff named his protagonist Beelzebub, Lord of the flies, and one of the chief devils.
There is a fourth way, that of Gurdjieff, in which the student continues in his usual life-circumstances but strives for a harmonious development of his physical, emotional and intellectual life—the non-monastic "way of the sly man." The accent was on harmonious, all-around development.
Q. What was the Fruit of the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil that was supposedly eaten by Eve and then offered to Adam?
A: Knowledge restriction Encoding.
Q: (L) Well, then how did mankind come to be here?
A: Combination of factors. Numerous souls desired physical existence then was altered by three forces including principally Lizards through Grays, Nephalim and Orion union.
Q: (L) You said numerous souls desired physical existence. When the numerous souls did this, how did physical existence come to be?
A: First was apelike. Souls altered them by transfer of Souls into seeded bodies. Orion Union was first [to manipulate and produce] Neanderthal. Put humans there for incubation process.
Q: (L) Were genetically altered ape embryos put back into ape females for gestation?
A: No. Souls only.
Q: (L) They put the souls into the ape-like bodies and thereby produced Neanderthal man?
Q: (L) Did the soul's presence in the ape body cause its genetics and DNA to change?
Q: (L) So, these souls entered into living creatures on this planet to experience 3rd density reality and by entering in caused mutation?
A: Yes. Then were altered by Orion Union first. They resemble you.
Q: (L) Who resembles us?
A: The Orions. Orion Union. There are others in Orion Community.
Q: (L) Are some of the Orions not good guys as we would term it?
Q: (L) Are some of them good guys?
Q: (L) So, you are saying that the original creators or genetic engineers were Orions?
A: Close. The original engineers but not inhabitants.
Q: (L) Where did the souls come from that entered into the bodies on the planet earth? Were they in bodies on other planets before they came here?
A: Not this group.
Q: (L) Were they just floating around in the universe somewhere?
A: In union with the One. Have you heard the Super ancient legend of Lucifer, the Fallen Angel?
Q: (L) Who is Lucifer?
A: You. The human race.
Q: (L) Are the souls of individual humans the parts of a larger soul?
A: Yes. Close. The One. All who have fallen must learn "the hard way." You are members of a fragmented soul unit.
Q: (L) What is it about wanting to be physical is a "fall"?
A: Pleasure for the self.
Having studied and practiced the basic ideas of the Fourth Way for over 2/3 of my life, it is not my plan to abandon the system. Without question, there is much valuable information now in the public domain that has its origin in the psychological system known as the Work / Fourth Way. Most probable is more undisclosed information.
When the Devil explains how to make a soul, a more complete understanding would have gone something like this:
- “The devil explained that he should teach people to not engage in unconscious procreation, to remember themselves, not to identify and so on, and then, after some time, they would grow souls.”
Also, it was not explained exactly how,
- “… they managed somehow to communicate to the earth what was happening at the gates of heaven.”
- “When St Peter was ready to open the gates, the devil would say, 'May I just ask one question—did you remember yourself?' 'Yes, certainly', the man would answer and thereupon the devil would say, 'Excuse me, this soul is mine'. This went on for a long time, until they managed somehow to communicate to the earth what was happening at the gates of heaven. Hearing this, the people he was teaching came to the sly man and said, 'Why do you teach us to remember ourselves if, when we say we have remembered ourselves, the devil takes us?'”
Channelled message? Remote viewing? Telepathic communication with spirit guides?

This piece was originally posted at tonylutz.com, in Mar. 2012. At that time I had only recently learned about the term limited hangout.
With re-posting it here at Gaian Corps, I knew that it needed an update — most of the material being presented in this update was already in mind.
But I wasn't sure how to characterize Gurdjieff in light of the new information presented in this update — was he a participant or a patsy? It's been a key point to resolve before composing this update.
In the original introduction I asked,
- “Is it possible the Fourth Way is but a limited hangout?”
Since writing that introduction, I've become more and more convinced, that was the case — the system of Gurdjieff's, commonly known as the 'Fourth Way' or 'The Work' — is in fact, a limited hangout. But not fitting Gurdjieff into the picture always raised a red-flag.
Under "Previous Thoughts" I gave my version of the story. “When the Devil explains how to make a soul, a more complete understanding would have gone something like this:”
- “The devil explained that he should teach people to not engage in unconscious procreation, to remember themselves, not to identify and so on, and then, after some time, they would grow souls.” (See Excerpt Tab above for complete text.)
Gurdjieff's proclivity for fathering children would argue against my revision to the story.
And beyond that, how does this 1950 release of information fit into the system of control that is so evident in 2015? (See "you can't fight City hall for more about the crime syndicate that controls the planet.)"
Pondering over this story – The Sly Man and the Devil – finally caused the connection to surface.
The devil in the Café is not the same Devil at St. Peter's Gate.
Gurdjieff never made that connection.
Note on this updated edition:
- All new information is contained under the Update tab above.
- All other tabs are from the original post.
Gurdjieff's years from a young adult to when he was 45 and surfaced in Moscow are shrouded in mystery. Whatever the provenance of the Fourth Way, one thing is certain, most if not all of the various 'parts' of the Fourth Way can be found in earlier texts, albeit not put together as well or as complete as had been done with the Fourth Way. The extent of Gurdjieff's involvement in creating the updated version referred to as the Fourth Way, is not material. What is material is the 'finished product'.
The Sly Man and the Devil hints at the source of the Fourth Way in the following passage:
- “This went on for a long time, until they managed somehow to communicate to the earth what was happening at the gates of heaven.”
How can this be anything other than channelled information (or some variation such as Remote Viewing, Telepathy, Extension Neurosensing and so on). And by what other means would the Devil at St. Peter's communicate with to the devil in the café?
The Devil wants/needs 'fat souls' — 'His' (its) survival depends upon receiving soul food. The Devil is the Matrix.
- On earth, the devil is the Matrix — the control system of nature/life, government, religion, elite cabals, central banking, trans-national corporations, non-governmental organizations and so on.
- On the astral plane / in the afterlife, the Devil is the Matrix depicted in the movie of the same name — nothing in the movie depicts life on earth (see Matrix – Limited Hangout).
In Debt of Existence, it is stated,
- “All that we are and have is given daily by our creator.”
Variations on this statememt are common to most if not all religions. We also see it in the natural world — food, air and water at the most basic level.
Going back in time, according to the proposition that Advanced Beings seeded life on earth, that also explains a few mysteries — how did celluar life originate, where did DNA come from, and more recently, how did primitive Homo Sapien develop hybrid grain, domesticated animals, language and so on. It is very possible that all these were made possible by information transfers from the Advanced Beings to terrestial human instruments that could receive this information — whether it be from channelled communications or simply inspired thinking and reasoning.
Like food, air and water, Advanced Beings provide what Homo Sapiens need, when they need it. It is law conformable, like growing a garden — if you want the garden to flourish, you give it what it needs.
“To pay the debt of our existence is a core principle of the Fourth Way teaching.
But then we incur a 'debt of existence'. (RTFPRead The Fine Print )
the book of children, chapter 3 | Conditioning (first 6 paragraphs)
Does a child not have as much right to privacy and freedom from parental conditioning as the parents expect for themselves? It is one of the most fundamental problems facing humanity today. The future depends on how we solve it. It has never been encountered before. For the first time man has come of age, a certain maturity has happened - and as you become mature you have to face new problems.
Slowly, slowly, as man progressed, he became aware of many kinds of slavery. Only recently in the West have we become aware that the greatest slavery is that of the child. It was never thought of before; it is not mentioned in any scripture of the world. Who could have thought ... a child and a slave? A slave to his own parents, who love him, who sacrifice themselves for the child? It would have looked ridiculous, utter nonsense!
But now, as psychological insight has deepened into the human mind and its functioning, it has become absolutely clear that the child is the most exploited person; nobody has been exploited more than the child. And of course he is being exploited behind a façade of love.
And I don't say that the parents are aware that they are exploiting the child, that they are imposing a slavery on the child, that they are destroying the child, that they are making him stupid, unintelligent, that their whole effort of conditioning the child as a Hindu, as a Mohammedan, as a Christian, as a Buddhist, is inhuman; they are not aware of it, but that does not make any difference as far as the facts are concerned. The child is being conditioned by the parents in ugly ways, and of course the child is helpless: he depends on the parents. He cannot rebel, he cannot escape, he cannot protect himself. He is absolutely vulnerable; hence he can be easily exploited.
Parental conditioning is the greatest slavery in the world. It has to be completely uprooted, only then will man be able for the first time to be really free, truly free, authentically free, because the child is the father of the man. If the child is brought up in a wrong way then the whole of humanity goes wrong. The child is the seed: if the seed itself is poisoned and corrupted by well-intentioned people, well-wishing people, then there is no hope for a free human individual. Then that dream can never be fulfilled.
What you think you have is not individuality, it is only personality. It is something cultivated in you, in your nature, by your parents, the society, the priest, the politician, the educators. The educator, from the kindergarten to the university, is in the service of the vested interests, of the establishment. His whole purpose is to destroy every child in such a way, to cripple every child in such a way that he adjusts to the established society. There is a fear. The fear is that if the child is left unconditioned from the very beginning he will be so intelligent, he will be so alert, aware, that his whole lifestyle will be of rebellion. And nobody wants rebels; everybody wants obedient people.
It is one of the most fundamental problems facing humanity today. The future depends on how we solve it. It has ever been encountered before.
Only recently in the West have we become aware that the greatest slavery is that of the child. It was never thought of before; it is not mentioned in any scripture of the world. Who could have thought ... a child and a slave?

“When these three-brained beings of your planet, particularly of the present time, who have the means of gorging to satiety and of fully satisfying all their other needs and who perhaps could do something for the struggle against this phenomenal evil prevailing on their planet, are satiated, and their mentioned needs are satisfied, and they are seated on what are called their ‘soft English divans’ in order, as is said there, ‘to digest it all’ – they do not profit, even during this time so suitable for sincere thinking ... but indulge instead in the maleficent self-calming. ...
“For instance, when after gorging and satisfying themselves these important and power-possessing beings of the Earth are seated on their said divans, the associative thoughts which ought inevitably to flow in them receives shocks from the reflexes of their stomach and sex organs and wander freely in all directions, as they say there, ‘to their hearts content,’ and so pleasantly free and easy, as if they, that is these thoughts of theirs, were ‘strolling of an evening in Paris along the Boulevard des Capucinus.’
“When these power-possessing beings of your planet are seated on their soft divans, subjects like the following a-think in them.
“For instance, how to get his revenge on that acquaintance of his, John Smith, who a few days before looked at a woman he ‘liked,’ not with his right eye but wit his left.
“Or this ‘digesting’ terrestrial power-possessing or important being thinks: ‘Why did not my horse come in first yesterday at the races as I expected, but some other?’
“Still, it does occasionally happen there, that some power-possessing or important being of the Earth suddenly chances to think not under the influences of the reflexes of his stomach and sex organs, but thinks sincerely and quite seriously about these or other questions, with particular regard to this terrifying terrestrial question.” (pp. 1057-61)
This vignette illustrates how when such ‘power-possessing beings’ ponder on such issues, “their thoughts flow in all directions without any intentional exertion of any part whatsoever of their presence.”
Gurdjieff's opinion about Power Possessing Beings does conform to what is nowadays is being reported.
“Only recently in the West have we become aware that the greatest slavery is that of the child. It was never thought of before; it is not mentioned in any scripture of the world.” — Osho
I think that statement by Osho is indicative of the situation with the so-called Power Possessing Beings that more or less control life on earth — this understanding is only recently acquired by those same beings, and they find themselves boxed in by this revelation, and realize to counteract this would require disclosure that they are unable to make.
